Franklin Square Gallery Featured Artists

The latest work of painter Carol Kidd and potter Betsy Sellers will be showcased at the next Members Show. Composed with strong colors and contrast, Carol Kidd’s canvasses reflect her view of local and European scenes. “My travels influence and inspire many of my paintings, some of my favorite topics being the landscapes of Tuscany, Provence, and of course, the beaches and marshes at home.” Appreciated for her great variety of styles, Betsy Sellers displays wheel-thrown pottery often combined with hand-building, carving and piercing. “I am so intrigued by the clay’s fluidity, which can be shaped, bisque-fired, glazed, fired in the kiln, and then last thousands of years….the possibilities are only limited by one’s imagination, a few laws of physics, and maybe one’s patience.” A reception will be held on Friday, May 3 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Fire in the Lakes Festival

Without prescribed burning the longleaf pines in Boiling Spring Lakes and across the region would disappear. So, too, would the red-cockaded woodpeckers, venus flytraps and a host of other carnivorous and rare plants that need fire to thrive and survive. The importance of controlled burning is cause for a daylong festival. The highlight of the festival is a demonstration controlled burn to give festival goers the opportunity to see how burns are conducted and learn more about their importance to the ecosystem. Fire equipment will be on display and Smoky Bear is scheduled to be a special guest. Games, food, live music, animals, raffles and face painting are also on the day’s agenda.

Art Shak Opening Reception

The Art Shak in Southport announces a show of new works by photographer Pam Nelligan of Carolina Beach. Newly relocated to the area, Pam is showing for the first time, a series of photographs which harken back to the early days of photography. Pam states; “Earth Spirit is a series of monochromatic images that were made to convey the spirit of the earth. I believe that our home has a spirit and I see her as female. I have created images of her in natural places. Her image is quiet and reverent. The images are ethereal and moving, intending to draw the viewer in and to feel the celebration of spirit.” This show is the first for these images and represent a small part of a 5 year effort, which is ongoing. “My intention is to photograph her in natural places in our area. I have found several which reflect the unique beauty of coastal NC.” Wine and cheese will be served, and the artist will attend. RSVP’s are appreciated, though not required.
